World of Dance

Of course, dance competitions have long been a novelty. They were held in ancient times for entertainment. Although now this tradition has been preserved, from simple entertainment due to the development and expansion of opportunities to place both performances and lessons on the Internet, it has begun to move to a more competitive level. In the early 90s-2000s, you could see a notable increase in the popularity of dance. Perhaps this was due to abrupt music changes, namely the rapid spread of disco and dance music.

Regardless of this, the number of dance competitions began to grow sharply, where everyone could try to demonstrate their skills. It is for this reason that the World of Dance arose.

Of course, before World of Dance, there were local dance counterparts in almost every country, but none of them could achieve such substantial publicity and popularity. The very idea of creating the most extensive dance competition did not come just like that but was nurtured for many years. The founders of World of Dance were Myron Marten, David Gonzalez, and Michael McGinn. From the beginning, it was an idea with many points. This show allowed different dancers to show their talents and connect a large number of brands, thereby increasing the income of World of Dance, which in turn allows to increase the main prize for the winners. This strategy has been a win-win on all fronts.

Over time, as expected, World of Dance began to develop very quickly. Joined more and more dancers from different countries that, in turn, later officially allowed to have this event outside the United States where it was created.

This large-scale development was followed by various brands, TV channels, and other media, which later joined the World of Dance, bringing it to a new level. Now it was not just an event. It’s a collection of a huge number of channels on various media, live events, and even their own TV show, but let’s talk about everything in order.

From the very beginning, World of Dance was conceived as an annual event that will allow dancers worldwide to compete for the grand prize or simply to demonstrate their dancing skills. As practice has shown, even for those dancers who did not win but showed themselves very well, it was not a defeat. The fact is that such dancers were often offered to officially perform in various dance groups, which allowed them to build their careers on it. It is because of the first successful event that each subsequent one became only grander.

To evaluate such competition, it was necessary to come up with the most honest and independent evaluation system, which was done. In order to determine the winner, a standard sports evaluation system was selected - by category. There are five main categories by which each dancer is evaluated: choreography, technique, performance, creativity, and presentation. For each category, you can get a maximum of 20 points, which is a total of 100 points. To determine the grade as honestly as possible, the highest and lowest scores out of these five grades are not considered. This allows you to take three other points and determine their arithmetic mean. This will be the overall assessment of the performer.

Subsequently, more than 20 countries around the world joined the World of Dance. It was clear that perhaps it was time to turn this event into something more. That's how the idea of making the World of Dance TV Show came about. This show allowed both the dancers to earn an unprecedented $ 1 million for the dance show and introduce more people to World of Dance. One of the show’s leading executive producers was Jennifer Lopez, who took an active part in both the development and the show itself, where she performed as an ode to the judges. Also among the executive producers were Benny Medina, David Gonzalez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Matthew Everitt, Kris Curry, and Matilda Zoltowski. Produces the show Universal Television Alternative Studio, Nuyorican Productions, and of course the World of Dance. Despite some fears, the first season, which started on May 30, 2017, was liked by people and rapidly raised public interest in World of Dance, which provided a continuation for the second season. The judges of the first season were Jennifer Lopez, Derek Hough, and Ne-Yo. The winner, or rather the winners of the first season, were the brothers Les Twins from France. Second place went to American dancer and actress Eva Igo. Third - salsa dance school from Columbia - Swing Latino.

The second season of the show passed without significant changes. The categories have been changed, and now there are 4 of them, namely Junior, Upper, Team Junior, and Team Upper. This division into categories provided a fairer game, which allowed to assess each of the participants better. In the third season, there were some changes, namely the host of the first two seasons, Jenna Dewan left this position and was replaced by Scott Evans. Also, this season, the presence of guest judges was ruled out. The show's fourth season is currently the last.

Of course, performing at the annual World of Dance event is the primary goal for many dancers. Every year you can see more and more talent from around the world, and the fact that World of Dance is so widespread around the world makes it even more accessible. Of course, in order to judge dancers as honestly as possible, they should be evaluated by people who are well versed in this matter. For this reason, you can often see choreographers, professional dancers, show-business experts, and others in the judges.

Of course, such popularity could not go unnoticed, and video hosting services such as YouTube.

Currently, the official World of Dance channel has 5.5 million subscribers, and a total of more than a billion views and more than 6,000 videos.

And we remind you only on the official channel, not including such channels as the World of Dance Championship Series, NBC World of Dance, World of Dance Studios, World of Dance records, and others. Of course, on other platforms, they are not going to lag behind. For example, they have more than 1.5 million followers on the official Instagram page, 5 million on Facebook, and 181 thousand readers on Twitter.

Of course, even given the large-scale live shows in different parts of the world, the TV show that was liked by a huge number of people, the constant involvement of new sponsors, and even the release of its fashion line World of Dance is not going to stop. Looking back, we can definitely understand that in the future, we expect even more grandiose show more talented dancers from around the world, more coverage of media space, and perhaps even a new format that already once again will be able to count to bring dance competitions on the new level. We just have to wait and enjoy the masterful dance numbers, and if you are a dancer, who knows? Maybe you should try to take part and reach a new level.
