Ringo Starr

Ringo Starr is the professional pseudonym of the English singer, musician, actor and songwriter Richard Starkey was born on July 7, 1940, in a family of confectioners, Richard Starkey and Elsie Gleave, in Liverpool.

His mother Elsie was a fan of dancing and singing, his father was fond of swing, they were active fans of this hobby until Richie's birth, constantly spending a lot of time in the local dance hall. Elsie was too caring for a mother to constantly control her son. As a child, he suffered from several serious illnesses that led to long-term treatment and hospitalization. Even though he was admitted to the hospital multiple times he did pick up an interest in drumming while he stayed in the sanatorium where he got admitted when he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and to get rid of boredom the medical staff gave makeshift mallets and that helped Ringo get interested in drumming overall. Unfortunately, over time, the singer's father paid less and less attention to his family. This escalated into his constant absence from home, alcohol consumption, and other material problems. In 1944 Starr family moved to another area of Dingle, Admiral Guy, but this did not affect the habits of Richard Stark, which soon led to the divorce.

Eventually, after Ringo recovered, his mother found a new love, and together they moved to Liverpool. There he found a large number of records that inspired young musician to make music. It's weird to even think about it, but if it weren't for the misfortunes that befell him as a child, we might never have gotten the legendary Beatles drummer. After recovery, the boy did not return to school and decided to find a job. The search was greatly slowed down by the boy's poor health, so Ringo was not hired where physical strength was needed.

Eventually, he found a job as a mechanic where he met people with whom he was able to share his passion for music. Ringo Starr rehearsed with them during lunch breaks. Of course, these were not quality-specific songs and most often it was just improvisation, but all the participants liked it.

The first band that Starr joined was Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. The band later gained immense popularity due to its combination of genres such as rock and roll and skiffle. Ringo played with the Hurricanes for a long time, until in 1962 he accepted John Lennon's offer to join the Beatles.

He did have some concerns initially when he got replaced for the drums by another person for the second session of the recording of a song, but that was later explained as the manager didn’t want to take any risks. The Peak of the Band happened during the 1960s which was more commonly known as Beatlemania where the group’s popularity has reached its very peak. Eventually, in June the Beatles were scheduled to play concerts in Denmark, the Netherlands, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. But Ringo was stricken by sickness and has remarked that he would be replaced because of it but that hasn’t happened and on 11 February 1965, he married Maureen Cox.

The time of the marriage wasn’t the best as he was experiencing quite the time for himself since the stress and pressure of Beatlemania had reached a peak it went as far as he had received death threats and was paranoid about possible assassins and went as far as to positioning his cymbals vertically to foil attempts on his life. All this pressure not just for Ringo but also for his bandmates had affected the overall performance of the band and as remarked by Ringo himself: ‘’ We were turning into such bad musicians’’ and also he remarked that he was slowly feeling more isolated from the band since they kept doing things that stemmed further from traditional rock music and it didn’t require him to be part of it.

In 1970, after the break-up of the group, he devoted himself to writing and performing his songs for Americans: 'It Doesn’t Come Easy' and 'Photograph', 'You are Sixteen'. And in the UK, the most successful single was 'Back Off Boogaloo', which reached 2nd place in the ranking. Ringo's album in 1973 was in the top ten not only in the UK but also in America. His television career was also very busy, he participated in television shows, documentaries, even children's programs (portraying 'Mr.' in the first two series of ‘'Thomas Friends’' where he also led the story). In the first season of the children's series PBS 'Shining Station of Time,' he was a conductor. Since 1989 he has also toured with thirteen variations of Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band.

Starr developed his style of playing the drums, where feelings took precedence over the technical perfection of the game, this style of playing had a great influence on the subsequent compositional point of view of many drummers. Having developed his style of playing, he did not stop there and given the need to improve the overall play he made some special techniques of drum operations (selected handle, adjust the drums below, and the use of silencers on the tonal rings). Of all his performances, he considers the Beatles' Rain to be the most successful. In 1999, Starr was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame, and in 2011 he was named the fifth-greatest drummer of all time by Rolling Stone.
