Why Jeff Bezos is Launching an All-Female Crew into Space—and Why I’m Excited

This isn’t just a celebrity space trip. It’s a game-changer for space exploration, representation, and the future of commercial space travel. But why is Jeff Bezos and Blue Origin launching an all-female crew? What’s the mission’s bigger purpose? Let’s dive in.

As a Space Engineer, Author of Akua Goes to Space and It’s Not Rocket Science (Penguin Books), and someone who has worked on NASA’s Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI)—helping launch heat probes in the search for intelligent life—I’ve dedicated my career to exploring Space and inspiring the next generation of space pioneers – particularly young women to push the boundaries of what’s possible in space.

1. Making Space for Women—Literally

Historically, space travel has been a male-dominated field. Even though women have played critical roles in space history—from Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space (1963), to Sally Ride, the first American woman in space (1983)—the gender gap remains huge.Out of the 600+ people who have gone to space, only about 11% have been women. This trip aims to encourage young girls and women to bravely go where many others haven’t dared to go.

2. Expanding the Vision for Space Tourism
Blue Origin’s long-term goal isn’t just about sending astronauts—it’s about making space accessible to everyday people. By sending a diverse, high-profile crew—including a pop star, a journalist, and a business executive—Mission 31 challenges the outdated image of who can go to space. By showcasing women in space at a mainstream level, Blue Origin is creating a new wave of excitement for space tourism—inspiring more people to see themselves in space.

This mission proves that, You don’t have to be a NASA astronaut to fly to space. The future of space travel includes people from all backgrounds.

3. Creating a Cultural Shift

Jeff Bezos has always positioned Blue Origin as a forward-thinking space company, focusing on innovation, sustainability, and accessibility. Mission 31 aligns with this vision for the future. Bezos has often stated that space “should be for everyone.”  Mission 31 is about changing the public perception of space travel itself.

4. Space as a Platform for Inspiration

Missions like this aren’t just about technology—they’re about storytelling. And who better to tell this story than Katy Perry, Gayle King, and Lauren Sánchez?

Katy Perry has long been fascinated by space (remember E.T.?). With her influence, she can introduce millions of young fans to space science, STEM careers, and the dream of interplanetary travel.

Mission 31 isn’t just a one-time event—it’s a preview of what’s to come. I’m excited to cover this mission extensively —bringing you insights, behind-the-scenes stories, and exclusive updates. Follow along as we witness history in the making!
