5 Seconds of the Summer(or 5SOS) is a pop-rock band of four talented young boys who had managed to win the sympathy of the crowd beginning with their first releases. In 2011, Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood decided to get creative and make several cover songs of popular hits. Students couldn't imagine that their first cover song "Mike Posner Please Don’t Go" would be able to get more than 600,000 views on YouTube. The newly formed band of lead vocalist & rhythm guitarist, lead guitarist, and bassist had been extended by drummer Ashton Irwin very soon. By the way, the band name was created by Clifford. And, already at the end of 2011, the boys played their first show at Sydney pub.
The band's performance of famous hits was so talented that it attracted major music labels and publishers. After a short while, the boys dealt with Sony/ATV Music Publishing. Inspired by a great career start, in 2012 5SOS pleased with the first music release EP titled Unplugged. Without any additional promotion, it reached the №3 position on the iTunes chart in Australia as well as the Top 20 in Sweden and New Zealand. That clearly shows that the boys really know about music, so they are able to create incredible singles.
Their first single "Out of My Limit" released in 2012 managed to receive more than 100,000 views within the first 24 hours! Moreover, 5SOS' international ratings significantly rose when One Direction member Louis Tomlinson had posted a link to their song Gotta Get Out on YouTube. Then guys go to London with Jamie Scott, Steve Robson, James Bourne of Busted and other artists. Their goal was to create new songs.
Based on amicable relationships that were formed between 5 Seconds of Summer and One Direction, 5SOS supported One Direction on their worldwide Take Me Home Tour. It was a really impressive tour that covered the UK, US, Australia, and New Zealand. The guys also performed several shows at Allphones Arena in 5SOS' hometown of Sydney. By the way, all dates for the tour in Australia were sold out in several minutes. In the prime of success, 5SOS announced its deal with Capitol Records. The year later, the band supported One Direction one more time on their Where We Are Tour in the US, Canada, UK and Europe.
The first self-titled album of 5 Seconds of Summer peaked at number one in 13 countries of the Billboard 200 Chart. The single "Amnesia" impressed the Billboard so much. By its words, it is the most searing lyric on the album.
It’s 100% success, so in May 2015 the guys embarked on their first headlining world tour, the Rock Out With Your Socks Out. 2 months later, the band released the second album “Sounds Good Feels Good”, and continued the creation of new incredible tracks, such as "Hey Everybody!", "Girls Talk Boys", and others. Also, it had successfully finished Sounds Live Feels Live World Tour. Of course, the band continued intense touring for several more years. Then it met an issue: do they need to continue developing as a band or not? Literally, one of Hemming’s questions was: “We had to look at each other and say 'are we going to stop now, or do this forever?”. Fortunately, the boys decided to go out from this crucial moment as a band that is ready to release new music further.
In 2018, 5SOS released the album “Youngblood”, and the self-titled song was officially certified Australia's song of the year. The album was listed in the Top 100 of the Billboard, and the song was listed in the Top 20 of the Billboard Pop Songs chart. The song is actually good: in 2020, it was certified 11x platinum in Australia, 4x platinum in Poland, 3x platinum in New Zealand, 2x platinum in the US, and more. The band also managed to show on The Voice in 2018. They performed one of their best singles "Want You Back".
By the way, except for the music career, the boys also do philanthropy. For example, in 2019, 5SOS has created its own philanthropic brand "Friends of Friends" clothing collection. All profits from the first release of the limited edition were donated to Safe Place for Youth. The goal of the project was to help and empower homeless youth.
Their new album titled Calm received generally positive reviews from critics. It was released on 27 March 2020 and it has been a real success! It peaked at №2 in the US( but it was able to peak at number one if the shipping error hadn't happened). Also, it reached the fifth position on the Billboard 200 chart and was named as one of the Top 50 Best Albums of 2020 by Billboard. Calm ranked in the top 10 on 17 charts, and it remains the best-selling album of 2020 in the UK. This year, the band was also honored in the APRA AMCOS' The 1,000,000,000 List. Despite being on COVID-19, the guys continue working on new hits.
